Christmas Tree Decorating 101

I've been trying to get my house decorated for Christmas and thought that I would take a break from untangling a crazy ball of beads and give you my rules for great tree decorating. I bet all of you arty, crafty people that are reading this already know how to decorate the perfect tree, but I'm going to give you my rules anyway! These little tips are sure to make even the most humble tree look its best! Of course if you have kids helping(like I do!), all rules are out! Any way they put the decorations on with those sweet little hands is fine with me!!

  1. Everyone knows the first thing to go on are the lights, but don't just wrap the lights around and around like you just caught it with a fishing net made of Christmas lights. Start at the bottom and work your way up, and that way you already know the cord will reach your outlet. The key is to tuck, tuck, tuck! They should go in and out from the trunk to the tips of the branches as you go around. Also, instead of going around and around the tree, go back and forth. When you reach the point where you first put the lights on (I like to start at the back, but where ever the plug will end up is good also), go back the other way. They are far easier to take off and don't get tangled around the tree while you are putting them on.
  2. Beads and/or garland. Follow the same back and forth principal( but not in and out) and make even, loops around starting from the bottom. As you go up the tree, try to make the loops alternate with the ones below.
  3. Ornaments. For visual weight use your larger ornies on the lower half and smaller ones towards the top. I like to start with my largest ones and then fill in with smaller ones. Give your tree dimension by tucking ornaments in towards the trunk also. They will sparkle with the lights you've tucked in!
  4. The last things I like to add are ribbon and/or popcorn. I do start from the top on ribbon and tuck evenly around the tree in a downward spiral. I make my tucks slightly smaller around the top and then gradually larger as needed.
  5. Oh, and for those of you that like icicles, those are very last, of course...

When I am finished I will post pics of my beautiful tree!

We put our tree up yesterday. We need to finish that up putting on the rest of the ornaments. I try to follow some rules when putting up the tree. Some how the lights still get tangled when I'm taking it down! :)

My husband put the lights on our little Charlie Brown tree last night (see my latest blog post) and now I get to decorate the poor little guy! No matter how sad they look naked, they always seem to take on their own beauty once you make them feel special! That will be my job tonight!
